A dozen worthy causes benefit from Seaton’s week of summer fun

Pacesetting Seaton Carnival Committee gave away more than £1,500 to a dozen worthy causes on Friday.

The money was raised at another “great” week of summer fun, chairman June Millman told the annual general meeting, in the town hall.

She said that as the first illuminated procession on the East Devon circuit, Seaton had a difficult job – needing to set the bar high.

“But I feel this year we have succeeded, “she told the meeting. “Although not as many floats took part, we all felt the standard was very high, and we were congratulated on a very successful procession - with only a few mishaps.”

Mrs Millman said they had enjoyed a great carnival week with lots of things going on which were very well supported by the people of the town and area.

She thanked the traders for selling the carnival programmes, which brought in lots of money for them to give to local charities.

She had special praise for Roger and Wayne Broom and fellow members of the float committee who had “surpassed themselves” with “The Year of the Dragon”. It finished the year with four first prizes, two seconds and a third.

She also thanked Hilda and Dennis Morgan who are standing down after many years of organising the judges for procession night. She said they would be much missed but fortunately a replacement team had come forward in the shape of Stewart and Pauline Leach.

Mrs Millman added that more invaluable help had come from

Jonathan Croose, an Exeter College student doing a thesis on carnivals

“He offered his services to us for the season and they proved invaluable in all aspects of carnival week, “ she said. “He threw himself wholeheartedly into everything he was asked to do. In recognition we intend to create another prize class on procession night - The Jonathan Croose shield for best music, and we hope he will come and judge it himself.”

Mrs Millman said after two years in office she was handing over the chairmanship to Kevin Frost.

Other officers elected for next year were Roger Woolland, president, Marie Churchill secretary and Terry Churchill, treasurer.

On the committee are Angela Broom, Peter Burrows, Wayne and Jenny West-Broom, June Frost, Rosemary Partridge-Hogbin, Vic Raskin, and June Millman.

* The main recipient of the profits this year was the town’s first response unit which received £500.

Other donations went to: Royal British Legion, £150, the RNLI, £150, The Bellini Bathers, £100, Seaton Fire Brigade, £100, Seaton Drama Group, £75, Seaton Majorettes, £75, Seaton Scout Group, £75, Seaton Guides, £75, Seaton Football Club, £50, the visually impaired, £30, The Memory Café, £30.
