Budleigh Salterton’s community helipad was called into action for the first time on Friday (March 17).

The emergency services were called out at around 10.25pm after reports of a man with a head injury.

An ambulance attended and the Devon Air Ambulance landed on Budleigh Salterton Football Club’s pitch, which was recently designated a community landing site.

Football club secretary Keith Wood said: “At approximately 10.40pm the lights burst in action followed by the purring of the rota blades of the helicopter as the emergency services machine landed; the paramedics then ran to the patient in the town.”

The man was taken to Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital by road ambulance for treatment on a head injury.

A spokesman for the football club said: “The outlay for the council and the permission granted by the football club has been justified and worthwhile.

“You can’t put a value on what the air ambulance is worth to the community and we will support it as long as we can.”
