MP for North and West Devon and Bideford Mayor speak of their shock over announced factory closure.

THE announcement of the closure of TE Connectivity (formerly Tyco) in Bideford has been met with shock and dismay.

The company announced today (Thurs) it would be relocating its manufacturing work to other TE facilities, with the loss of around 250 jobs on the Bideford site.

Torridge and West Devon MP Geoffrey Cox said the closure would be a ‘huge blow’ to town and surrounding area.

He said: “I’m only just hearing the news myself but it’s deeply dismaying and of profound concern.

“There is still a lot to find out but clearly if the factory does close then it will be a huge blow for the area.

“First and foremost my main worry is those affected by the news and I will do everything I can to support the workers and their families by bringing additional help to the area.

“But I have to say is that first I want to get straight to the bottom of what is happening and find out if there is anything we can do to mitigate or prevent the closure.”

The Mayor of Bideford has said he is shocked at the announcement to close the TE Connectivity factory.

Cllr Simon Inch said: “I’m very sorry to hear this, it’s one of the biggest employers within the town and it’s going to be quite a hit.

“Its devastating for the work force and the families involved.

“I had no idea this was going to happen, and I hadn’t heard they were thinking of relocating at all.

“I’m trying to wrack my brains about how the town council can support the people involved; I’d like to think we could do something.”
