CHILDREN from 13 schools gathered at Rock Park in Barnstaple today (Friday) to pay their respects to the fallen of the town in the run up to Armistice Day.

Now in its 10th year, the annual Children’s Remembrance Service saw youngsters from all of the Barnstaple area schools participate, as well as representatives from Barnstaple Royal British Legion and the uniformed services, North Devon MP Nick Harvey and local councillors.

The service was conducted by Reverend David Fletcher, priest in charge at St Peter and St Mary Magdalene Church and chaplain to Barnstaple British Legion.

The Exhortation was read out by Ken Hartnoll, president of Barnstaple RBL, and the Last Post played, followed by the traditional two minutes silence at 11am before young people from each school placed wreaths at the memorial. For the first time a lone piper added the skirling note of bagpipes to the proceedings.

After 10 years of organising the event, British Legion members Sylvia and Michael Harrison will be stepping down from the role and handing over the reins to Fiona Laing and Jennie Woodmason.

“I am so pleased the children’s service has taken off and there are people who are going to continue with it,” said Mrs Harrison.

“It has really become a part of the town and was very well attended this year. It has grown from five schools when we started out to all 13 in the area.”
