What good news at last: The scrapped Strand plan (Exmouth Journal, March 15). How encouraging that some of our councillors are showing some moral courage and personal integrity by responding to public opinion.

Can our councillors, who are by law “representatives” and not “delegates”, show similar moral courage and integrity and scrap the dreadful blight of the superstore plan?

Councillor Tim Wood states: “There has been a multitude of consultations”. What he failed to point out was that they all showed overwhelming objection to another superstore leaching the life out of our town when our local traders are fighting for their very lives to stay afloat in these dreadful and uncertain times.

All who live in our lovely town deserve better than the interpretation by East Devon District Council’s deputy chief executive Richard Cohen of a mere 507-person “loaded” questionnaire, as being “the wishes of the people”.

FIields in Trust, the charity set up to protect outdoor recreational spaces and to commemorate Queen Elizabeth’s Diamond Jubilee, provides a substantial grant to upgrade recreational open space in exchange for protecting such places and making them “Fields In Trust”.

This would mean that the rugby grounds, thus protected, would remain a green, recreational space in the heart of our windsurfing and sports activity area for all time and would provide a venue for the many and varied clubs and events visiting our lovely town.

Such visitors would support our local traders and provide no threat to our fragile economy or our special environment. Can our councillors rise to the challenge?
